AgNext Hosts Ranch Gathering at the Eastern Colorado Research Center

AgNext, in partnership with the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association, recently hosted a Ranch Gathering at the Eastern Colorado Research Center (ECRC). The event brought together over 40 producers, researchers, and industry professionals to explore innovative technologies, learn from ongoing CSU research, and discuss key issues shaping the future of animal agriculture.

Technology Demonstrations

The afternoon began with hands-on demonstrations of innovative tools used in grazing research.

  • Virtual fencing: AgNext researchers Anna Shadbolt and Dr. EJ Raynor highlighted the potential and trade-offs of this emerging technology for managing cattle on rangeland.

  • Water intake trough: Dr. Matt Wilson from West Virginia University showcased a prototype water trough that allows researchers to measure grazing animal intake more accurately. This technology is an important step in understanding livestock nutrition on pasture.

  • Pasture GreenFeed: Attendees observed a working GreenFeed system and heard from AgNext researchers Dr. Pedro Carvalho and Dr. Juan Vargas about how this technology is advancing livestock emissions research.

These demonstrations sparked valuable conversations and gave producers an opportunity to ask questions directly of the researchers developing and testing these technologies.

Research and Industry Updates

Following the field demonstrations, attendees heard presentations by representatives from the CSU Department of Animal Sciences, the Eastern Colorado Research Center, Colorado Cattlemen’s Association, and AgNext.

  • CSU Animal Sciences: Department Head Dr. Patrick Doyle shared updates from the Department of Animal Sciences including that the department welcomed its largest cohort of students ever this year, reflecting growing student interest in animal agriculture.

  • Eastern Colorado Research Center: ECRC Manager Austin Couch outlined ongoing research projects and collaborations with faculty from CSU’s main campus.

  • Animal Nutrition and History of ECRC: Dr. Terry Engle highlighted the long legacy of ECRC research and shared findings from his recent work in animal nutrition.

  • PAP Testing: Dr. Tim Holt of CSU’s Clinical Sciences department provided insights into pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) testing in cattle.

  • CCA Updates: CCA President Erin Karney Spaur discussed state-specific issues impacting producers and facilitated an engaging dialogue with attendees.

The event concluded with a barbecue meal sponsored by Merck Animal Health, offering attendees additional time to connect with one another and with CSU researchers.

The Ranch Gathering demonstrated the value of bringing producers, industry leaders, and researchers together to share knowledge and explore innovation. AgNext looks forward to hosting future gatherings that continue to strengthen these partnerships and advance sustainable animal agriculture.
