AgNext’s Feedlot System Specialist Dr. Sara Place Appointed to Dairy Management Inc. Scientific Advisory Council

AgNext’s Associate Professor of Feedlot Systems, Dr. Sara Place attended her first formal meeting of the scientific advisory council for Dairy Management Inc. (DMI) this past fall in Chicago.  Dr. Place has an extensive background in sustainability in animal agriculture and has spent much of her career working directly alongside dairy organizations and grew up on a small dairy in upstate New York. While Dr. Place’s professional career has been focused heavily on emissions related to beef production, this opportunity lends itself well in demonstrating Place’s commitment and passion for the U.S. dairy industry.

Place describes this opportunity of her decade long career as one that brings her passion, upbringing and her scientific interests all together into an interesting and important opportunity. “Being raised on a family dairy, I understand how important good stewardship of check-off related funding is and I am excited to lend my expertise to support and offer ideas to DMI on how they can best utilize research funding to help advance the industry toward it’s sustainability goals,” Place said.

This council exists to ensure that money collected through check-off programs for DMI meets the needs for advancing the science in the dairy industry. Dr. Place will lend her expertise in methane, greenhouse gas mitigation, and agricultural system sustainability. The board as a whole consists of a robust cross-section of the nation’s best talent in the academic and the animal agriculture industry and includes representation from across a multitude of institutions. In addition, several corporate partners also sit on this board to provide a robust cross-section of stakeholders. Place will maintain her role on the advisory board for the next two years.
